The 2015 Colorado Rockies Fantasy Camp is underway!

The first day of 2015 Fantasy Camp is in the books with only one team of the five teams going to bed with the distinct honor of being 1-0.

The morning started with the camp crew – 58 campers plus coaches and staffers – at Denver International Airport with snow falling during the 28 degree morning. After a lengthy de-icing prior to take off, the group landed in Phoenix to a pleasant high-70s and crystal clear skies. After a lunch, group introductions and a camp photo, everyone headed to the clover leaf fields for a skills session. Coaches used this time for scouting purposes. Following the skills portion, there was a one hour scrimmage between campers.

Once the scrimmage ended, everyone came inside for dinner. It was this time that the coaches headed to the draft room and picked their teams. Following the draft, team rosters were announced for the Dragon Slayers, Stritt Streak, Frazier’s Heaters, The Scorpions and Vinny’s Cousins.

With the five-team camp, it left Vinny’s Cousins with a bye for the first game – they spent an hour in the hitting tunnel with coaches Vinny Castilla and Ryan Spilborghs – while Dragon Slayers hosted Stritt Streak and The Scorpions took on Frazier’s Heaters, that game’s home squad. Dragon Slayers were led by Steve Foster who pitched a complete game shutout in the 14-0 win. While, thanks to a last at-bat surge, Frazier’s Heaters tied The Scorpions, 9-9.

On a side note, earlier in the day it was announced that Fantasy Camp Coach, Rick Mathews, a member of all 18 Colorado Rockies Fantasy Camps, will be departing camp early as he’ll be Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Rick Mathews doing what he does best.

Rick was unbeaten as a pitcher for Centerville Junior College (as IHCC was known at the time) in the mid-60s before moving on to Drake University. He returned to Indian Hills as the head baseball coach in 1986 and led the team to a .700 winning percentage over the next six years, including a trip to the JUCO World Series in 1992. He will join original Rockies scouting director Pat Daugherty (coached at IHCC for 17 years) and former Rockies pitcher Kevin Ritz in the Hall of Fame.

Congrats to Rick and thanks to everyone for a great first day.

Congratulations, Rick. Next it will be the Rockies Fantasy Camp Hall of Fame!

Congratulations to Rick – one of the most genuine individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting – let alone playing on his team at camp a number of times – 3 times I believe.
