First doubleheaders of 2015 Fantasy Camp

Every morning of Fantasy Camp, the participants, coaches and staff members get to the Salt River Fields complex at about 8 a.m. unless they want to get an early lift in, then they take the 7:15 a.m. bus. Whether lift or don’t, everyone enjoys walking into the building with the strong smell of Major League bacon floating through the hallways. The bacon is by far the best part of eating like a pro. Chef Ray Dominguez and his staff do a great job of preparing and cooking lots of it for everyone.

Following the morning feast, campers head into the Theater Room for Kangaroo Court. Kangaroo Court is used every morning to dish out camp violations, all in fun of course. After some friendly banter between campers and coaches, everyone left the theater and headed out to the field for the second games of camp. Stritt Streak got the early morning bye and headed to the cage to work on their hitting. Hitting was their focus since they only were able to muster up four hits in the first game.

The pairings for the games were Dragon Slayers against The Scorpions and Frazier’s Heaters versus Vinny’s Cousins. Slayers dropped their first game of camp, 6-3. Larry Merfeld and Andy Isberg each had two hits for Dragon Slayers. Steve Masted was the offensive hero for The Scorpions, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Frazier’s Heaters squeeked by Vinny’s Cousins thanks to a last at-bat 7-6 win. Steffan Tubbs drove in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh and six scoreless relief innings, which included a final out comeback line out snag.

After a quick lunch, everyone came back out for the second bill of the camp’s daily doubleheader. Between The Scorpions and Stritt Streak, Rob Peckham (3-for-4, RBI, run) and Alan Hanson (3-for-4, RBI, run) led the way for The Scorpions in their 9-3. After falling behind 3-0, The Scorpions scored nine unanswered runs over the final three innings. The Dragon Slayers saw nine of their 11 players had multi-hit games as they beat Vinny’s Cousins, 14-9.

With the second day in the books, the last thing to do before everyone headed back to the hotel was the Fantasy Camp Hors d’oeuvres in the Rockies home clubhouse. It was a good day from Scottsdale and everyone is looking forward to what Day 3 will bring.
